The crowd was hyped, the set was going well, but all the lead singer of the amazing band on stage could think about was how small the number of humans in the crowd was. The Larks front-woman had been taught from an early age to spot the difference between human, werewolf, and vampire and tonight it was even more painfully obvious which was which. Insecure and innocently naive young humans were being picked up left and right by vampires. A few of them had already disappeared into the night to become food and possibly even a headline in the next days papers.
Emiko Makani sighed mentally but kept singing, her outward body not showing her inner turmoil. Her mother and father had wanted to raise her to be a paragon of good, at some points that had been a hunter at others simply an inhibitor of vampires feeding. But Emi was not the type of person who did things just because she was told, in fact, most of the time she did the opposite. Her body swayed to the beat, entrancing those around her with her seductive motions and the seductive notes of her song. The yellow dress she'd chosen tonight had turned out to be perfect, it was eye-catching and it held the attention that was turned to it. Her feet were starting to hurt a little from standing in one place so long in the golden high heels. A tinkling sound came from her wrist every time she lifted or moved her arms, the charm bracelet sitting there was the only thing that was left of her childhood, it had been a gift from her father. Daddy's girl was one term that could be used for her, but even her father hadn't been able to keep her from turning out this way.
Not that she had turned out bad, in fact, quite the opposite. Emiko was a good person, she just tended to act a little more promiscuously than her parents would have liked. She was more independent and mature than her mother had ever been. Therefore, she thought that she had turned out pretty well. She had her own home, and a very popular band with an ever expanding fan base. Her life had worked out well.
So why was she still plagued by guilt every time a vampire disappeared with it's victim?
It was a question she had long been wondering, but now was not the time. The set was wrapping up and pretty soon she would be able to get out there on the dance floor and boogey. Oh yeah, she was so ready for that. The music crescendoed dramatically and her voice followed perfectly, ending on a high trill that most people couldn't hit and make sound good at the same time, she managed somehow and then it was over. The Larks took a collective bow, thanked their audience for listening so intently, and exited the stage.
Emiko was engulfed in the traditional post-gig group hug and smiled happily. All five members of the band began jumping ecstatically up and down, exclaiming how great the set had been and how exciting it all was. Emiko participated for long enough to not look weird and then extricated herself from her band mates. They would all go their separate ways soon after, their relationship was close but they were not all best friends, it worked out best that way. When you were too close to your band mates things always managed to get screwed up.
A stool stood a few yards away at an empty spot at the bar and Emiko plopped into it happily, looking longingly at the rows of alcohol behind the counter.
"If you order quick I can sneak something to you." Emi's favorite bartender whispered with a wink, but Emi shook her head.
"We nearly got caught last time Star. Let's not take anymore chances, I don't want you to go to jail because of me." Starla was a bartender, and a werewolf. She had worked for a time at Emiko's parents club in New Orleans. When Emiko ran away from home, Starla was one of the only ones to support her decision, realizing that it was what Emiko needed to become her own person. Starla had even allowed Emiko to stay with her for a short time, and had schooled her in bartending in case Emiko had ever needed to get a job.
Emiko ordered a coke from Starla, who's smile threatened that Emi might get some alcohol in it anyway, but the drink that came was virgin and Emi sipped at it slowly. It was heaven on her throat after the long set. Tapping her fingers gently on the bar, Emiko stared out at the dance floor, searching for something to do.
